Contrechamps — Generative Visual Identity
Over five consecutive seasons, we collaborated with Geneva-based graphic design studio Neo Neo on the development of generative visual identities for Contrechamps, an ensemble dedicated to contemporary music.
Each season, we developed custom software exploring the relationship between sound and visual forms, translating musical compositions into unique graphic expressions. Through audio analysis and real-time generative processes, the software transformed the characteristics of each musical piece into evolving visual compositions.
For the different seasons, the system explored the circle, sphere, fluid, typo as a visual research space. Musical parameters such as frequency, intensity, timbre, and variations in sound influenced the behavior of shapes across its surface, generating an infinite range of possible forms. Each composition produced its own visual identity, capturing the unique characteristics of a particular musical moment.
These generative forms became the foundation of the season's graphic identity. Selected moments were frozen and translated into printed posters, transforming ephemeral sonic events into tangible visual objects.
Through this five-year collaboration, we explored how creative coding and generative systems could become integral tools in graphic design, establishing a dialogue between contemporary music, computation, and visual communication.
